How to Plan a Deck Cable Railing Project: Parts, Layout and Buying Checklist
A deck cable railing project is easier when you plan the full system instead of buying parts one at a time. The goal is to know your layout, post material, number of cable runs and hardware style before placing an order.
Measure each run separately
Start with a simple drawing. Mark every straight run, corner, stair transition and end post. Measure each section separately because corners and stairs may require different fittings.
Confirm post material
Wood posts, metal posts and composite post sleeves may require different hardware. Check post thickness, hole size and whether the cable will pass through intermediate posts or terminate at each end.
Build your parts list
- Stainless steel cable in the correct diameter and length.
- End fittings and tensioning fittings for each cable run.
- Protective sleeves or washers for clean holes through posts.
- Angle fittings or angle washers for stair sections.
- Cable cutter, measuring tape, drill bits and layout tools.
Choose stainless steel grade
Outdoor decks are exposed to weather. For long-term outdoor use, 316 stainless steel is recommended for stronger corrosion resistance, especially in humid, rainy or coastal environments.
Plan for code and inspection
Local building code may control guard height, post spacing, cable spacing and opening limits. Plan your cable count and post spacing before installation, not after the railing is already drilled.

- Total railing length by section.
- Post material and post size.
- Number of horizontal cable runs.
- Cable diameter and finish preference.
- Straight runs, corners and stair sections marked separately.
